openSUSE 12.1 compatibility Empty
PostSubject: openSUSE 12.1 compatibility   openSUSE 12.1 compatibility EmptyWed Jun 13, 2012 4:02 pm

I am trying to install openSUSE, but not having much success. I have tried all the combinations offered by the boot menu. Using VESA, and safe mode, I can see the script end with a kernel panic
+0x57/0x14e

All other options result in a black screen, and a crash. My system consists of the following:
Gigabyte GA-P55a-UD6
Intel i7 860
8Gb Corsair ram
Seagate 120Gb eide drive
Lite-On DVD dribe
Nvidia Gforce 450GTS video card 1Gb memory
Creative Labs Audigy sound card

If any of these components are incompatible / unsupported by openSuse, please let me know.

Sounds like a nice machine, and I would expect all the pieces to be compatible. Is the error happening during install, or on boot after the install?

Looks like there is a possibility it is related to this nasty bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=745024 , which would happen on boot. If this is the case it should be fixable by booting in repair mode from the install cd.

If all else fails you could try a net install. In the past it worked well for me when the standard method didn't.

I'm afraid bdquick was right about the bug. I checked out the link he sent me, and it described my problem to the letter. Downloaded the 12.2beta, and all is well with the world. Seems like the bug was corrected. With any luck the release version won't introduce a new one.

Good to hear you got it working. With the beta installed you should just be able to upgrade through them to the final edition.

I'm thrilled. I like openSUSE. The one thing that disappoints is thet it isn't using the full
8Gb. of memory. Windows can only use 4Gb, but I was under the impression that Linux could
use all available memory.
