DSL Modems hacked.

This article made my local LUG's mailing list today. Sounds like a nasty attack, and I'm not sure how noticeable it would be.

That's nasty all right. There goes that $49.95 protection people subscribe to. I don't know about you, but despite registering every modem I ever owned, never received notification of updates.
The only outfit that notified me was U.S. Robotics about a 300 baud modem during the bulletin board era.

I've never messed with modem updates tbh. My ISP for the last 10 years has owned the DSL modem and are in charge of it. I'm not sure how much functionality it actually has, as its just a modem to my knowledge. I keep a router on the back side of it, and do periodically check for firmware updates. I'm currenly using a linksys e2000.

I don't have a clue as to the what and how it's done. Just not enough know-how. The codes shown in the article are meaningless to me. There are a lot of very smart people out there though, too bad so many of them are bent on mischief

Yeah I don't understand it all either. And it is to bad that so many people think its easier to work at stealing than making an honest living.
