Glass Eye CAD ? Empty
PostSubject: Glass Eye CAD ?   Glass Eye CAD ? EmptyWed Mar 27, 2013 6:38 pm

Just wondering if there is any kind of CAD app. for Linux similar to one called "Glass Eye" ? http://www.dfly.com/

"GE" is for designing patterns and works using a library of real glass samples but more importantly it has features that speed up the design process not found in other CAD apps.

I'll be the first to admit that I know nothing of working with stained glass or CAD. People who do though make some very pretty things. However as far as CAD programs this seems to be a pretty good list. http://www.techdrivein.com/2011/08/8-best-cad-apps-for-linux.html

Did a little googling for the subject on linux and found some people using inkscape and gimp to do it. http://www.beastwithin.org/users/wwwwolf/blog/2012/03/stained-glass-in-gimp-and-inkscape.html

Sorry I'm not more help. I assume there are forums related to stained glass, and they might know something.

Wow, GE is impressive. the price tag is probably scary though. My wife did a lot of stained glass work about 10 years ago filling the house with stained glass windows and Tiffany like lamps, but true to form refused to use a computer assisted software for her designs.
Are you going to use the software in a business environment, or for a hobby?

I've been using gimp on my scanned drawings to aid in color decisions and I have only found 1 other person in the "glass" community who is using Linux and they asked me if I knew of any apps. I haven't checked out inkscape yet and I will search those links again .

All of my work is of my own design and hand drawn with pencil and paper. I have never (with exception of a lamp) used commercial patterns for design but would like the speed of computer aid for some tasks.

It's just a hobby right now but I plan to go full time when I can, if I can retire.

P.S. Yes it is pricey!

My wife did her own design work, but she did not want to use any CAD software, claiming it was much faster to do it by hand, besides, by the time she learned the software, she could finish doing everything she wanted. Her only concession to mechanization was the purchase of a specialized pair of sizzors that made allowances fot the came. At the time I had a current version of Autocad LT. There weren't any specific programs for glass work then.

Have you given the Glass Eye the 30 day try?

Not yet, I want to wait until I have the time to fully devote to it otherwise the 30 days will go to waist.
