Didn't get any toys this Christmas, must've been a bad boy. So I decided I'd break out a few old games. IL-2 was always one of my favourite sim's and was one of the reasons I'd kept a windows box going. I'd tried it in Wine in the past but there were always one or two niggles that took the shine off of it. As it had been two years at least since I'd last taken a look at Wine I decided to take another look.
So I downloaded the latest version (1.2.0) from the repo's and also saw there was a new qt4 gui for wine, so downloaded this too. Popped the disk in the drive and clicked on the set-up.exe file, this invoked q4wine so I installed using this. No problems.
On start up I got a 1024 x 768 window so I went in and edited the config file for wxga and full screen. Game played fine but on quitting from full screen mode my Plasma desktop was corrupted. A few minutes fiddling with wine config and I discovered that Wine now has a virtual desktop mode, so I selected this. Absolutely no issues since then, everything works. In vista there was occasionally some noticeable joystick latency with my Saitek Evo Cyborg, I don't see this in Wine. So all in all am pleased to see the progress in Wine. Worth checking out.
