PostSubject: vlc/dvb-t Help Needed   vlc/dvb-t Help Needed EmptyWed Nov 03, 2010 6:54 am

Does anyone know how to get dvb-t working on vlc?
I have generated a channels.conf file (using "scan") but when I try to open it with vlc, all I get is a string of messages:
    Quote :
    Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvb://'. Check the log for details.
I can't even find the log!!!
I have done much Googling, and searched the vlc forum/website without success, so I would be VERY grateful for any guidance.

    Many thanks in advance

I got typo should be dvb-t:// log is in messages vlc-> tools -> messages, ctrl M or start from cli may want to redirect. Also turn up verbosity 2 probably then try again.

    Hi FM

It's not a typo - I really am getting "dvb:".

I've now found the log (thanks!) and the problem seems to be that vlc cannot be convinced that I want dvb-t, not dvb-s. I have a Hauppage HVR-3000 Tri-mode card.

I had the same problem with "scan" and had to force the frontend to "1" ("0" is the dvb-s part of the card) but I can't work out how to do this in vlc. Do you have any ideas?

    I am using vlc 1.1 .4-1.

    That was the typo

the googling I saw has a command like..

    dvb-t:// :dvb-frequency=642000 :dvb-bandwidth=8 :sout=#duplicate{dst=display} :sout-display-delay=512

    http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=35357&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=0

Your error seems to imply you've just got dvb:// but this is going back a bit I did think maybe a build issue(1.1.4.1) but this is the latest doubt a nightly will help. Certainly doesn't seem straight forward have you had a look at the mythtv site might have something more pertinent i.e http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VLC http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Tzap this would be easier if I had one to play along with.. From what I can see going on the above is you can check signal quality from the channel.conf ...

Also from this thread seems playing should be as easy as vlc channel.conf but I'm a little confused about the streaming aspect and testing via vlc..
    http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=70114

Possibly the channel.conf isn't the correct format, can't really help specifically as never done it.

    addendum
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Opensuse_10.2 can't imagine this is to far off the mark.

This also maybe helpful http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-HVR-3000 also implies the kernel driver should be ok.

    Edit
Interesting bug here maybe or might get bit by this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdvbpsi/+bug/653616 but this isn't what your showing also looked for a later suse at mythtv http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Opensuse_11.0_-_11.2

PostSubject: Re: vlc/dvb-t Help Needed   vlc/dvb-t Help Needed EmptySat Nov 06, 2010 6:01 am

I'm still struggling, so let me start again and explain what I'm doing.

My TV card works perfectly with Kaffeine. However, it will only record in m2t format, and no matter what I try, these files will not maintain audio/video sync when I convert them to something I can put on to a DVD ( I posted about this ages ago). So, I thought I'd try another package (vlc) - hence the problems.

So, since my last post, I thought I'd simplify things, and try to get things working in Mplayer first before dealing with the complexities of VLC.

I'm still having problems. I have created a channels.conf file, and put it into ~/.mplayer, but when I try to run "mplayer dvb://" I get this message:

    Code:
    Playing dvb://.
    DVB CONFIGURATION IS EMPTY, exit
    Failed to open dvb://.

If I run SMplayer, all the channels are displayed correctly in the playlist, so it would seem that channels.conf is in the correct format, but selecting one just gives a blank screen.

I have checked that /dev/dvb exists, and tried permissions root:root and root:video without success.

I would be SO grateful for any more guidance.

    Many thanks
