I've been trying to burn the ISO for 13.1 but can not get the dvd to boot.

Is there something else I need to do before burning?

This is for the 32 bit but was considering trying the 64 instead.

Are you sure the DVD was burned successfully? You might consider doing:
md5sum /dev/sr0, or sha1sum /dev/sr0 just to compare the DVD with the iso checksum
That at least would eliminate one possibility.

Verifying the checksum is a good place to start. If the DVD fails, verify the checksum of the downloaded file itself. That's where I pick up errors, mostly. But I have a rather unreliable Internet connection.

Make sure you're burning the DVD as an ISO, not as a data DVD. Different burning applications this this by different terms. I've been confused by some. K3B is pretty clear about it now, I think it even asks if you're sure, if you're doing it wrong. Smile

In the past, burning the CD/DVD at the highest possible speed caused errors; slowing the burner down seemed to increase reliability. Don't know if it's still a problem or not, but it's something to try.

You didn't set the BIOS to *not* boot from the DVD drive for security reasons, and then forgot to set it back? Something I'd do. Sad

Good luck, and let us know the results.

OK,  it seems that the ISO was corrupted so I tried again but now it hangs in limbo and will not download anything. My connection is good (fios) so there might be something wrong on their end.

I will resume this again later.

There is a very good alternative download location at Argonne Labs in the U.S.
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/opensuse/opensuse/distribution/12.3/iso/
If you have ongoing download problems, it's a good alternative.

Here is a review by "Dedoimedo" who holds his opinions in very high regard:
http://dedoimedo.com/computers/opensuse-13-1.html
I did not experience the crashing problems he describes. The difference may well be due to dissimilar hardware.

I have an aging board in my case and will try to upgrade soon but we just finished building a new "low budget" gaming computer for my son and I will have to wait till after the holidays to do anything else.

And if the new issue of Linux mag. has a Suse dvd, I'll save me some time and have a good read too!
If not, than I will replace my M/B anyway and continue the download.
