openSUSE 12.2 Rc2 Empty
PostSubject: openSUSE 12.2 Rc2   openSUSE 12.2 Rc2 EmptySun Aug 05, 2012 1:48 pm

I have been playing with this for a couple of days now, and on the whole I'm thrilled. The installation procedure was seamless, all the hardware was correctly recognized. A huge improvement over the beta, in a very short time. There are still some minor problems:

The splash screen is noisy, reverts to a clean boot selection screen,
then alternates between noisy splash, to a monochrome stairstep
until the log-in screen comes up. After this everything is normal.

The Yast software manager initially wants to load from CD#1
but after acknowledging the errors, works normally.

The system clock resets to UTC despite local time selection.
Tried hwclock -- systonhc, which appears to work on the surface, but on checking the CMOS, I find the clock reset to UTC none the less. During installation the software questioned my choice of local time, as it found no Windows installation on the disk. That's because I use removable hard drives instead of dual booting. This does present me with a problem of forever changing the BIOS. Not a good idea due to the write limitations of the CMOS. If anyone has any ideas on this, that would be great.

All in all, it's a keeper. I'll be sure to try and find converts for it.

The clock problem sounds familar, but I can't remember what I did to fix it on previous releases. Or its a bug that hasn't been fixed in this version yet.

I gave up on it, and made Windows 7 use UTC. Since each CD I try resets the system clock anyway, this may be easier on the CMOS in the end.

I also installed the KDE version today, and it's even better than GNOME. Kudos to the community!

After a number of updates, the noisy splash screen problem cleared up on it's own.
I now see animated circular objects orbiting around the gecko. Cute, but hardly worth the angst trying to fix the problem, and the frustration of not being able to do it.

Noticed my splash screen was working now too. I would agree with you too, that its not worth the trouble of trying to fix it. It kind of reminds me of watching some of those UFO footage tapes with the "orbs" floating around.
