I am wondering about the possibility of malware accessing the firmware on these devices. If the firmware is upgradeable, then it is feasable, with dire consequences.

Not to make you paranoid but the firmware is upgradeable on several components. Some of the current cd/dvd drives even come with windows programs that check for updates online. The main piece of updated firmware is the BIOS. Can't say I've heard of any malware flashing components, but I would say its a possibly if someone wants to get really evil.

DISCLAIMER: I'm no expert in the firmware area though.

True enough. A while back there was the CIH virus doing the dirty to the bios. As for the rest, I have only seen firmware updates for the router, and driver updates for the rest. Maybe my stuff is getting too old.

So are you thinking about getting an SSD? Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on it, if you do.

I have been considering it, but it would mean a major change of hardware. Currently I have a number of hard drives each with it's own operating system that I can plug into a removable drive bay. All that would have to go. I think I'll wait until I build my next machine.

Yeah I wouldn't consider it either, unless I was building a new machine. The price point really hasn't gotten to a point I like either. Generally I'm more concerned with storage capacity than booting in less than 10 seconds. Not that speed wouldn't be cool.

The price point is certainly a consideration. It looks like instead of reducing prices, there is a tendency to increase capacity. That's not a bad thing, as that would increase longevity of the device as well. On the other hand I use the smallest drives I can get away with for the operating system, and large capacity USB drives for the data to reduce the risk of loss when the inevitable crash occurs.

Did you ever happen to by one Laz? I'm now in the market to build myself a new PC and thinking about getting 2 SSDs, one for Win7 and one for Suse. Just stick the OS on them and use normal drives for storage.

I rebooted my old mythbox (late 2006) Friday after a kernel update and it just beeped at me. Finally found that DIMM slots 3 & 4 were not excepting RAM. Guess I got 6 years out of it, and it was on 24 x 7 most of the time.

No I did not. Still too many questions. I can handle almost all problems on a regular drive, but I don't know if my tools would work on SSD'.

It's strange that two slots would suddenly go bad without prior hints that something was happening.
A while back I started having boot problems, sometimes the BIOS would recognize the drives, sometimes not, etc. I drained the CMOS, and flashed the BIOS, and that cleared things up for me.
It would be something to try before you shitcan the mobo.

Forgot to mention the possibility of CMOS battery causing problems..
Again, worth checking.

I've decided that SSDs are still just to expensive. Instead think I'll go with 10,000 rpm drives. Welan certainly likes his. Unfortunately all the stuff I want is quite expensive.

Well, isn't that the truth. Same here. But in case you have a change of heart, here is an article that was posted on Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269.html a fairly thorough review. He also has an article on power supply manufacturers that might interest you.

Well I went ahead and ordered stuff last night. Decided to stick with the 10k rpm velicoraptor drivers.

That would be my choice over SSD's as well. One of these days I'll have to armwrestle the old lady for it.
Did you manage to revive your mobo, or will that be new as well?

This will all be new. I've decided to name it ochoCore.

Good stuff. Let us know how you make out, specially with the new "Secure Boot" feature.
By the way if you hook up two of those raptors in a raid0 configuration, you can come real close to SSD performance.

My son has an SSD in his desktop. He says it really makes a difference, and likes it. Of course, he has more disposable income than I do. Haven't been able to get him to pick up the hints about birthday/Christmas gifts, though.

I haven't heard anything bad about them, from the guys I know with them. Price and size are really the only thing.
