yes the official release is still hours away.
For those who like me just couldn't wait here's 12.1 with a few personal tweaks(color, theme and my personal preferences in always running apps)

It doesn't look too different - What have you discovered under the hood?
Did you upgrade or re-install - what was the experience like ?

Fresh install on a blank hdd. The new plazma desktop will take a bit more exploring yet. So far I have no complaint other than a few package not being in the repo's yet, but it's still early so..
I think suse fans are going to like this one.

I see now after a bit of poking about the new "apper" package tool look alot like the gui tool used by redhat, fadora and other spinoffs such as korrora. I know from my testing of korrora that it works very well, but can be a bit combersome for an old yast user. Never cared for zipper and packagekit just bothered me. If always liked yast's package handling even when it wasn't always working proper. At least you could always fall back to the cli and still have a working system.

Nice looking theme. Especially like the taskbar.

Thanks for the review, Welan. I am thinking of giving it a whirl fairly soon. Right at the moment I am thinking of building a new desktop since my present one is getting a bit long in the tooth and needs putting out to pasture. When I do I will load 12.1 on it.

Thanks for the early review. I'm still running 11.0 on my desktop, and was thinking this might be the time to upgrade. Keep us posted, please.

Good to see Mattb4 is still with us. Haven't heard much from you lately.

Smile Yeah, I am still amongst the ambulatory. Not been up to all that much other than readying for the annual Winter Hibernation period. Hope everyone is doing good.

I stop by everyday and see if there is still a spark of life on the Forum. Did read with interest BD's Powerline Networking review. Alas, there would be a lot of fun stuff to play with if I had the resources.

My 12.1 install just ended in failure. I chose the automatic configuration and walked away. When I returned I had lots of little squares in a jigsaw like pattern all over my monitor. I could see certain parts that resembled a desktop, but couldn't get the system to respond. Forced a reboot, and all looked well until it switched back to commands and said config file not found, then switched back to a black and white jigsaw pattern. I'm guessing that the xorg.conf didn't work right, and could be having troubles because of my kvm switch. Will have to try again tomorrow night with a manual configuration.

Or better yet now that I just thought of it, an init3 boot and run whatever the xorg config command is.

I downloaded the live KDE version of 12.1 last night and am burning to CD at the moment. Should be fun to see how that works. Sorry that your upgrade did not make it, BDquick.

Being as I have a slower DSL connection I am thinking of trying a load from the live and over time getting all that I need when I build the new computer. Should at least be interesting.

Well the live KDE CD loaded and runs ok though rather slow. So far from what I see of the looks it does not appear to be that much different. Now all I need is to collect enough bottle tops to buy the parts for the new computer. cheers

I was able to get into mine. They've reworked the display system and have something new called KSM, which I had to disable with "nomodeset" on the grub menu. I'm not getting full resolution of my monitor yet. And I always forget how to get a standard desktop.

Otherwise the system seems to work fine.

Glad you got it up and working BD.

It is not easy to recall some of the tricks for getting stuff going if you do not encounter a problem for a while. I am fairly rusty on my troubleshooting skills. Not to mention the stuff is a moving target. If I do not work on staying current it is easy to fall behind. Though I got a chuckle the other day seeing a job ad in the local paper for someone with MS-DOS experience as part of requirements at the Sheriffs department. Shocked

Installed 12.1 on my sandbox last night. A couple of minor issues during install, black screen on restart after install, resolved by reboot. Initial wireless configuration with Knetwork manager wouldn't stick, okay now. Occasional error message from KDE4 desktop manager during configuration. Everything all okay now. Usual procedure, install, network, updates, graphics, fonts, multimedia, all good now no further issues. Zypper install of Nvidia drivers and multimedia codecs straightforward. So far looks real slick, think this is going to be a good one.

Code:
zypper addrepo -f ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.1/ nvidia

Depending on the vintage of your card

Code:
zypper install x11-video-nvidiaG02

for GEForce6 or later, ....G01 for FX5xxx series

Good deal. I had tried to add it right after installing and it wouldn't add at that time.
