VPN help Empty
PostSubject: VPN help   VPN help EmptyFri Aug 27, 2010 2:15 am

Hi guys,

What I want to do is to overcome my Internet SP. They filter sites(web) and prevent skype.
So I thought setting up VPN would do the trick. I don't need to connect to my office or to a specific server or network... I just want to use the web normally with no restrictions as sometimes they even f?lter web sites that has nothing to do with anything like google's translate this page or translated search! Evil or Very Mad

I've read a lot but because networking is my weakest point in computers I almost couldn't help myself.

I tried knetworkmanager (vpn, pptp) but it crashes.
I installed kvpnc... but configuring it is even worse than hieroglyphics, what to select? what to put where... etc.

Any help step by step please is highly appreciated.

p.s.

a friend once gave me a little .exe file to just run click it under windows. This click only makes my internet free 100% (I lost the file and don't even remember it's name, and I don't even care.. it's windoze)

anything that simple for linux?

Still interested in vpn if it does the trick.

Hi Limo
I don't know anything about networks either - I am interested in the VPN as well - so if you find a solution, please publish it.

Hi Alastario... Now we are two lost guys...
Well... just been to an irc.. they advised me to search google for vpn router name forum or irc..

I'm getting so disappointed as I believe it should be handled inside linux forums.

Ok.. whenever I find something useful I'll let you know

hi Alastairo..
I've been trying!! well I could enter my router and get all the IPs, gateway, dns server... etc...
Used KVpnc and it seems I'm getting closer... the problem is that I don't understand all the terms in the setup/configuration

check this and tell me what you think.

Limo, Check out this link. I know the info is a bit dated and it's used with a older version of suse, but it may prove useful

Thx Welan for the links.

I think that you must have a static ip address for it to work. We have dynamic addresses here, so will have to set up a dyndns a/c.

Limo I'm not sure a vpn will do what you want, unless you're making a connection to a computer outside your local ISP to surf from. I suspect you need to look into using a proxy, to get around your ISP's lock down methods.

Someplace like http://www.publicproxyservers.com/, pick a proxy server, go to that address, and then there should be a field for entering the domain you want to visit.

I believe you are right, but using a public pr o x y server is one of the solutions to allow me to surf unrestricted. But still won't allow me to use skype.

I kept reading and searching and I can tell that it is possible to setup a prxy on my laptop to go through it to the outside world like putty, tinyproxy.

Do you think this is the right answer? which one (or any others) would you recommend? The one I'd prefer would be any that auto-magically detects and configures itself (if any) to overcome my ignorance .

I have mentioned before that a friend once gave me a copy of a windows software that opens up the net, skype.. etc by just running it once without any user interaction.
