    m2t file transcoding Empty
PostSubject: m2t file transcoding   m2t file transcoding EmptyWed May 12, 2010 4:02 am

I have recorded a TV programme from my TV card using Kaffeine. This resulted in a file with a .m2t extension, which plays perfectly on the PC (Mplayer) but is not in the correct format for burning onto DVD.

I loaded it into Avidemux, but the picture/sound sync gets totally lost, even before any processing. The sound is now more than 800ms in advance of the video! I know this can be adjusted in Avidemux, but this seems a very unsatisfactory solution, since getting the sync exactly right is a nightmare of a job!

Does anyone know of a straightforward method of transcoding m2t flies into a DVD compatible format?

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried devede? I gave up with all the transcoding/re-encoding after stumbling across it I've ever had few if any problems, from a quick google looks like it will be able to use .m2t test the iso in vlc before burning.

Thanks FM, I'll give it a go.

I've also been experimenting since my post, and had some success with Xvidenc. The resulting .avi file loads into Avidemux without the sync problems, although I haven't tried editing it yet. I also need to know what the optimum settings for Xvidenc are for creating a DVD (video bit rate, audio encoding, optimum wrapper, etc.), so any help on this would be much appreciated, too.

    Thanks again.

LATER: I have now tried devede. It looks fantastic, and seems to do everything I need - thanks FM.

The problem is that it is processing about half of my file, then "hanging". The display, says "Creating..." with the top line saying "1/2" and a blue bar about halfway, and the bottom line saying "100%" with the blue bar complete. The mpg file written to disc is fine, but only contains about half the programme. If I try writing directly to an .iso file, the same happens. Any ideas?

Interesting not to sure try starting from the command line and see if you can see what it is hanging at. The other option can you not record with something else this is something I can't actually test but I have tested streaming channels and recording using vlc, in fact I actually skipped it and just re-encode and broadcast. Mencoder also should do it, as for the variables sorry not sure use to know but have resorted to using the dvd flag if using mencoder or more often just into anything that devede behaves with. I have had the odd hiccup I recall with devede but normally if I'm not using it straight its because I've been playing with embedding subs.

The other thing are Microchips bits iirc they may well have a dvd flag, got to say me I'm generally for the easy way(devede) and would only end up googling for the mencoder dvd command.

    Edit:
Damn I should read doesn't xvidenc have a dvd preset flag, thought one of them did but not sure. Certainly recall one of them having a variety of presets, I always tended to trust the defaults, too much for my little head to comprehend. Also when using xvidenc(MC's bits) you can view the mencoder command quite often I've taken that as a starting point and tweaked.

    Thanks again, FM.

I really like the look of Devede, so I think I'll persevere with that for a while. A few more twiddles, and a few more posts, and who knows what will turn up! Naturally I'll post here again when I discover something.

BTW, I use Kaffeine because it supports DVB-T on my video card very well, and I've got it set up well. Not that I'm lazy, or anything!!!!

Again can't test but this old post implies you can change the recording format.

I had read that the recording format could be changed, but my version (0.8.8/KDE3.5.10 from Packman) does not have that option. I have reverted to 0.8.7 as shipped with 11.1, but with the same result. Strangely, the Kaffeine manual appears to show a Ubuntu (Gnome?) screen for version 0.8 with the record option present. Mysterious!

Apologies had a few problems with vmware and work getting in the way, I agree looks like another case of kde4 has less abilities than kde3.

    Edit..

Mmm not sure I thought kde3 kaffeine was fine and thought the problem was kde4. The kaffeine site also shows it I would pop into irc see what they say.

I've been doing some more research, and it would seem that the other file types were removed some time ago because of legal threats!

Honestly I'm back to another way or player. Not sure gxine may cope well, otherwise it would look like you can get mplayer to dump to .ts otherwise mencoder.

    One small step......

I now have Devede working. I downloaded the latest version from the OBS, and it seems to work well. I've just got to work out the optimum settings for maximum quality.

I'm still working on the other stuff!
