PostSubject: Playing Encrypted DVDs   Fri Mar 26, 2010 11:20 am

I've just met a new problem.

I tried to play a DVD using Kaffeine. It produced the following error message:

Xine Message-Kaffeine Player

The source seems encrypted, and can't be read.
Your DVD is probably crypted. According to your country laws, you can or can't use libdvdcss to be able to read this disc. (Media stream scrambled/encrypted)

I have libdvdcss installed (from the Videolan repo), together with xine-ui and codecs from Packman.

Does anyone have any ideas?

There should be a setting under the xine engine config for libdvdcss you have 3 options have you tried them all?

Though I haven't got kaffeine but do have vlc so suspect it'll be similar.(Though couldn't find the setting in smplayer). AFAIK once set this will be user app wide.

I had a similar problem yesterday. I had libdvdcss2 (from 10.3 days)
I also libdvdread and libdvdnav. I tried to copy a dvd with K3b and I got the dreaded message. Then installed libdvdcss and it fixed it.

Thanks for your help.

I'm still not having much success, but since I'm dealing with a "bonus DVD" which is not particularly interesting, I'll just consign this to the "pending" folder.

I just don't like to be beaten!

It is possible you will be beaten, afaik and with some googling some of the newer encryption modes are difficult even for window based machines.

css will only decrypt css encrypted dvd's maybe it is that you have another type i.e the 2 mentioned in above link ARccOS or RipGuard.

Thanks for the reference, fm.

Thankfully, the movie itself ripped without any problems. I'll only get really annoyed when I encounter a DVD I actually care about!! I will, however, try some experiments with the disk I have when time permits, and post any findings.

Thanks again for all your help and support.

Interesting generally it goes if you can rip you can play(Vis versa) so what did you use to rip?(Only a few backends that can be used so should be able to find a player using the same)

PostSubject: Re: Playing Encrypted DVDs   Thu Apr 01, 2010 4:50 am

I have done some more investigations.

To make a DVD multi-regional, I copy the VIDEO_TS file to my hard disk, (using the videodvd link in k3b), run regionpatcher on the .ifo file, then write the modified VIDEO_TS file back onto a DVD. This just works.

The DVD in question consists of two disks. Both original disks seem to play correctly on a multi-regional unit. The above process works fine on the first disk, but fails on the second.

So, to investigate the problem, I tried ripping individual tracks (using k3b). The default backend is ffmpeg. I found that this fails if I do a 2-pass process (default) but not if I do a single-pass. The error log from the 2-pass process gives some clues. Here are what I think are some relevant extracts:

libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys
libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patient
libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB at 0x0003d060
libdvdread: Error cracking CSS key for /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB (0x0003d060)

I get 2 of these messages, others are OK.

Then at the end, I get this summary:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
[ [34;1mdecode_mpeg2.c [0m] libmpeg2 acceleration: mmxext
[ [34;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] Using FFMPEG codec 'mpeg4' (FourCC 'DIVX', MPEG4 compliant video).
[ [34;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] No profile selected
[ [31;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] [33;1m warning [0m: Error opening configuration file ./ffmpeg.cfg: No such file or directory
[ [34;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] Starting 1 thread(s)
[ [34;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] Set display aspect ratio to input
[ [31;1mexport_ffmpeg.so [0m] [33;1m warning [0m: Could not read the complete 2pass log file "/tmp/kde-username/k3b_0.log".
[ [31;1mencoder.c [0m] [33;1m warning [0m: video export module error: init failed
[ [31;1mtranscode [0m] [31;1m critical [0m: failed to init encoder

I'd be interested on your views.

Many thanks again for your help.

Mmm far from knowing this is one for Microchip.

That looks to me like you have a region problem on the second disk. But it is a little sparse try the output from something else, personally I tend to go for vlc under the rule if that doesn't play it things are getting messy.

Problem is I believe changing the region is limited to a few times and generally not recommended unless you know it'll have little effect or as a last resort. I don't know of it on a repo and have never had to do it and it really would be the final test after exhausting all investigation angles.

Note this error and fix for 11.1 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_openSUSE_11.1_on_a_ThinkPad_T500

As I said before, I'm not too bothered about this disc. It's really just an academic exercise.

Thanks again
